In 2013, 48% of US residents had employer sponsored health insurance. Of those 20% were enrolled in a high deductible health plan, up from 4% in 2006.
Therefore patients are increasingly becoming consumers of health care rather than passive recipients. They are being forced to take more responsibility for the cost of their health care to high deductibles, copayments and core insurance. That’s because more employers are shifting cost of healthcare to workers to keep their own cost down. So, patients are choosing the providers that give them the most cost effective treatment plan.
